While Michaels’ name may be unfamiliar, you’ve likely heard her hit songs. Much like Chris Stapleton was a beloved country songwriter before breaking out as a performer in his own right, Michaels has penned tracks for some of the biggest names in pop. For instance, she wrote Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” Fifth Harmony’s “Miss Movin’ On” and “All In My Head (Flex),” Hailee Steinfeld’s “Love Myself,” Selena Gomez’s “Good For You” and “Hands To Myself,” Britney Spears” “Slumber Party,” and Nick Jonas’ “Close.” And that’s in addition to co-writing almost every song on Gwen Stefani’s last album, as well as Gomez’s recent single “Bad Liar,” and Linkin Park’s “Heavy,” which was written with Chester Bennington before his passing.

To say Michaels, along with songwriting partner Justin Tranter, has some serious cred would be an understatement. Her own first single, “Issues,” was released in January. As she told Entertainment Weekly, “It was the first time I had written a song that felt so much like myself that I couldn’t picture anyone else singing it.” Though she didn’t name names, Michaels did admit, “There were definitely a lot of people that wanted that song.” The decision to keep it for herself proved wise, as “Issues” went platinum and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, in addition to hitting the fourth spot on the Mainstream Top 40.

Michaels’ second single, “Uh Huh,” hasn’t received remotely the same response since its release in June, but she has more to offer. The singer-songwriter’s debut EP, Nervous System, just dropped on Friday. It features both singles, plus five additional songs. With a Billboard Music Awards performance already under her belt, Michaels can next look forward to this month’s MTV Video Music Awards, for which she scored a Best New Artist nomination.
