The White House released a statement Friday responding to Johnny Depp’s joke about assassinating President Donald Trump. The administration called the actor’s controversial remark “sad,” and urged his Hollywood colleagues to denounce the comment.

As Gossip Cop reported, Depp joked about assassinating Trump during an appearance at the UK’s Glastonbury Festival on Thursday night. “When was the last time an actor assassinated a President?” the actor asked the crowd, who responded with a mixture of groans and cheers. He added, “I want to clarify, I’m not an actor. I lie for a living.”

The Trump administration has now admonished Depp’s comments by issuing a statement saying, “President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it’s sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead. I hope that some of Mr. Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official.” As of this writing, no one in the entertainment industry has weighed in on Depp’s joke, but he’s been hit with a barrage of criticism on Twitter. Trump himself has yet to issue an official response of his own.

As for Depp, the actor hasn’t been shy about expressing his disdain for the current president. Shortly before Trump won the 2016 election, Depp said in an interview, “If Trump is elected… we will see the actual last President of the United States. It just won’t work after that.” He also referred to Trump as a “brat” during a Q&A at Arizona State University last year. And perhaps most famously, Depp portrayed Trump in Funny Or Die’s fake movie based on the former real estate moguls’ book, The Art of the Deal.

UPDATE: Depp has now apologized for the assassination remark. In a statement to Gossip Cop, the actor said, “I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump. It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone.”
