A tabloid story from last year claimed that Johnny Depp was refusing to do interviews for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales because he didn’t want to be asked questions about Amber Heard. Gossip Cop exclusively debunked the report when it first emerged. Time has proven it false.

On May 17, 2017, the National Enquirer wrongly reported that Depp wouldn’t appear on talk shows to promote the latest installment in his popular franchise for fear he’d be asked about his tumultuous divorce from Heard. This false article was concocted after the actor made a surprise appearance at Disneyland as his Pirates of the Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow. The magazine’s bogus theory was that Depp demanded to promote the film in character at a theme park as opposed to sitting down for conventional interviews.

The story didn’t make much sense from the start. Depp had already sat down for an interview in the wake of his split from Heard, which occurred nearly a year before the release of his Pirates sequel. Regardless, days after the Enquirer published its phony article, Depp appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote the movie. Later that week, Depp was interviewed on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” In the short time that followed, the actor attended the film’s red carpet premiere in Los Angeles and participated in press junkets around the world.

It seems the publication just wanted an excuse to write about Depp and Heard’s acrimonious divorce, so it capitalized on the release of one of his movies to do so. However, one of the biggest enemies of the tabloids is the passage of time, which has disproven everything about the outlet’s wrong report. It’s also worth noting, Depp was never asked about his divorce during any of the interviews he did for the film.

Unfortunately, Gossip Cop has had to debunk several more stories surrounding Depp and Heard’s breakup over the past year. Most recently, we busted the Enquirer’s sister outlet, Star, for falsely claiming that the actress was quitting Hollywood following her failed marriage. Once again, time negated this claim.

Instead of quitting acting, Heard recently signed on to star in the romantic thriller Run Away With Me. Shortly after that, she was cast in the indie drama Gully. She’s clearly not leaving the movie industry, but there’s a pattern here. Tabloids are using Depp and Heard’s divorce to create false stories related to their careers, but there’s always a mound of evidence to discredit these claims.
