John Green opened up about his new book, Turtles All The Way Down, and his struggles with mental illness on Wednesday’s “GMA.” The author is of course best known for writing The Fault In Our Stars, which was adapted into a movie with Shailene Woodley. Watch the video below.

Turtles All The Way Down, which was released on Tuesday, is Green’s first novel since The Fault In Our Stars came out in 2012. While that book and his prior efforts largely focused on teen romance, this new effort is about a teen struggling with OCD. Green, who suffers from the disorder himself, appeared live at the “Good Morning America” studio in Times Square to discuss the topic with George Stephanopoulos.

Of the novel’s main character, Green explained, “She has obsessive-compulsive disorder and she feels like she has thoughts that she can’t get rid of that kind of feel like they’re coming from outside of her. Then she uses compulsive behaviors to try to manage these thoughts that she can’t stop having.” He noted, “I think there are a lot of people with anxiety disorders. There’s a lot of people who live with obsessive thought problems. I’m one of them. And one of the reasons I wanted to write this book is I did feel very alone in that for a long time. I think that psychic pain can be tremendously isolating and that can only compound the hurt of it.”

For Green, his career, in which he heavily interacts with his fans (called “nerdfghters”) online, has provided much comfort. “I love writing books. I love making videos. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do it,” he said, adding, “I love being able to connect with people and help connect people to each other if I can in my work.” And with this book, he said, “I hope people understand, maybe get a glimpse of what it’s like to live with mental illness, this kind of mental illness. I also hope people who maybe love someone who has mental illness, we all know that experience of wanting to take pain away from our kids, those of us who have kids, and writing about that was really important to me.”

The interview wrapped up with one of Green’s nerdfighters getting to ask him a question. Check out the video below!
