John Boyega, who stars as Finn in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, lashed out at The Daily Telegraph, calling the paper’s profile of the actor “inaccurate.” See Boyega’s tweet below.

The profile, entitled “Star Wars: John Boyega, the boy from Peckham who stormed Hollywood,” was written by The Daily Telegraph’s Camilla Turner and describes the British actor as growing up in a “rough area… where gangs, guns and knives were part of everyday life.” The newspaper reported that many of his peers were victims of violence, and quoted a source as saying, “A lot of boys in his year are now in prison or dead.”

Boyega, who’s poised for major stardom with the release of the new Star Wars film, took issue with the paper’s depiction and tweeted that the story was “Inaccurate. Stereotypical. NOT my story.”

Gossip Cop reached out to the reporter who wrote the profile and she stands behind her account. “I was really surprised by John’s tweet,” Turner told Gossip Cop. “I’ve been hit by hundreds of tweets, I thought I was giving some background (on his upbringing). I was really shocked that people were so upset.”

Turner explained that her editor asked her to report on his background, as the actor is still largely unknown, and she thought it was interesting that he came from an underprivileged background. “No ones challenged any points about it,” noted Turner. “I stand by everything I wrote. He hasn’t challenged any particular point for inaccuracy.”
