Joe Biden comforted a crying Meghan McCain over her dad John McCain’s cancer on “The View” on Wednesday. The senator is suffering from glioblastoma, which killed Biden’s son. Check out the moving video below.

In the first segment of Biden’s interview, he spoke about the Alabama special election and Donald Trump. Following a commercial break, McCain said to the former vice president, “This is the hard part. Bear with me, okay? I couldn’t get through your book. I tried. Your son, Beau, had the same cancer my father was diagnosed with six months ago.” As she started to cry, the co-host continued, “I think about Beau almost every day. And I was told, I’m sorry, that this doesn’t get easier. But you cultivate the tools to work with this and live with this. I know you and your family have been through tragedy that I couldn’t conceive of. What would you tell people?”

Biden got up from his chair to move closer to McCain to console her, prompting her to say through tears, “It’s not about me, it’s about everyone.” The politician acknowledged that it is “about everyone,” but took McCain’s hand and told her, “One of the things that gave Beau courage, my word, was John. Your dad took care of my Beau… Beau talked about your dad’s courage. Not about illness, but about his courage.” He then assured her that while this cancer is “about as bad as it gets,” “There’s breakthroughs that are occurring.”

McCain went on, “There is hope, and if anyone can make it, your dad [can]. Her dad is one of my best friends… We’re like two brothers who were somehow raised by two different fathers or something because of our points of view. But I know, and I mean this sincerely, even when your dad got mad at me, saying I should get the hell off the ticket, remember what I said about your dad? I said, I know if I picked up the phone tonight and called John McCain and said, ‘I’m at Second and Vine in Oshkosh and I need your help, come,’ he’d get on a plane and come, and I would for him, too.

He further vowed, “I swear, guys, we’re going to beat this damn disease,” expressing hope for the “prayer that the science will outrun the disease.” When specifically asked to talk about his late son, Biden became emotional, prompting him to quip to McCain, “You’re a bad influence on me.” She ultimately thanked him for his “compassion,” saying, “You’re a great hope to me and everyone else in the country right now.” And with another segment coming up, she said, “I promise I’ll stop crying.” Watch the full video below.
