Jimmy Kimmel Spelling Bee Video

Jimmy Kimmel participated in his 14th annual spelling bee on Friday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” facing off against 12-year-old Ananya Vinay. Watch the video below!

Vinay, Kimmel’s opponent in this so-called “war of words,” won the Scripps National Spelling Bee earlier this month. It’s become tradition for the late night host to compete against the famed competition’s winner. The tween already took home $40,000 for her official victory, but would she also score bragging rights by defeating Kimmel?

Well, after correctly spelling 35 uncommon words in the Scripps bee, the odds were in her favor. But Kimmel told Vinay, “Have you enjoyed your time as champion? Well, that time is about to end, young lady. There’s a new champion about to jump on that spelling horse right now. You may have won the spelling bee, but I am about to win the spelling A.”

Cousin Sal was head judge, but Kimmel promised he’d be unbiased. As always, the “pronouncer of words” was Guillermo, wearing a bee costume. Of course, the “expert word pronunciator” was anything but, butchering words like “sleuth” and “coalesce.” Vinay actually looked upset each time she struggled to understand Guillermo, misspelling the words because it was nearly impossible to decipher what he was saying.

At one point, Kimmel just sat down without answering because he was that confused. Gossip Cop won’t spoil the end result. Vinay also appeared on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” this week, playing against both Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, but without Guillermo’s pronunciation tripping her up. Check out both videos below!
