Jimmy Kimmel opened the 2018 Oscars on Sunday with a monologue that made pointed jokes about the state of Hollywood. Watch the video below!

In honor of the 90th anniversary of the Academy Awards, the broadcast began with old-timey, black-and-white footage as Kimmel did mock narration. The color returned as the host made his way on stage. He began by calling it a “great honor” to be back at the show, but warned, “This year, when you hear your name called, don’t get up right away. Give us a minute. We don’t want another thing.” Kimmel called last year’s Best Picture fumble “unfortunate,” and joked that the accountants were just trying to do “comedy.” He told the star-studded crowd, “I’m hoping things will go smoothly… This is history happening right here. Our friend Oscar is 90 years old.”

Kimmel joked that the statue is the most accepted man in Hollywood, a reference to the #MeToo Movement, which he went on to reference by name, along with the #TimesUp and #NeverAgain campaigns. “We can’t let bad behavior slide anymore. The world is watching us. We need to set an example,” the emcee said, going on to call it a “night of positivity.” He said one such positive story is the success of Black Panther, along with Wonder Woman. He noted “ceilings have been shattered,” with the first female cinematography nominee, for example. “If you are not making history, shame on you,” Kimmel playfully chided.

Kimmel also discussed the controversy surrounding Mark Wahlberg’s salary, and deemed Get Out director Jordan Peele a “triple threat,” cracking, “No other than President Trump called Get Out the best first three-quarters of a movie this year.” Margot Robbie also received a shout-out, as did Timothee Chalamet, leading the host to quip that Call Me By Your Name was “made to upset Mike Pence.” A joke followed about Christopher Plummer’s age, and then recognition was given to Meryl Streep for her streak of nominations. Tying it all back to his comments about the status of males in Hollywood, Kimmel quipped that this was “the year men screwed up so badly, women started dating fish.”

It was announced in May that Kimmel would be hosting the Oscars for the second year in a row. Prior to scoring the big gig, the late night star oversaw the Emmy Awards and the American Music Awards in years past, as well as the ESPY Awards and the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, so he’s no stranger to emceeing such a major event. In the days leading up to this new turn on the Academy Awards stage, Kimmel didn’t give much away about his monologue, but he did reveal one film he planned to poke fun at.

The Shape of Water is about a woman who has sex with a sea monster. So probably that one. That’s got to be right at the top,” Kimmel joked in an interview with USA Today. “That’s something we haven’t seen in the movies before, certainly not in an Oscar-nominated movie. I haven’t done the research, but I’m pretty sure that’s true.” As promised, the ABC personality did reference the critically-acclaimed film in his opening, scoring lots of laughs.

As this year’s host of the Academy Awards, Kimmel is once again following in the footsteps of Chris Rock (2016), Neil Patrick Harris (2015), Ellen DeGeneres (2014), Seth MacFarlane (2013) and Billy Crystal (2012). Check out full video below of Kimmel’s 2018 Oscars opening monologue.
