Is Jessica Simpson starting a liquor company with her husband Eric Johnson? That’s what a website claimed exactly one year ago today. At the time, Gossip Cop exclusively debunked the report about her launching an alcohol brand, and now 12 months later it’s still untrue.

On November 16, 2017, RadarOnline maintained that after the success George Clooney and Rande Gerber had with the $1 billion sale of their tequila company Casamigos, Simpson and Johnson were looking to “make a mint off” producing “top-shelf liquor.” An unnamed, untraceable and almost assuredly made-up “insider” was quoted in the article as saying the couple was “convinced they’ve got a gold mine on their hands.”

Oddly, however, in another section of the story, the website asserted Johnson and Simpson were looking to make money off their “love of drinking,” and so they were going to produce “fine wine.” At the time, Gossip Cop pointed out how the outlet’s supposed source alleged at one point they wanted to bottle “fine wine” and then shifted the narrative to how they wanted to “cash in” with “top-shelf liquor.” Not surprisingly, the concocted report offered no specifics about what type of wine they wanted to make or whether the proposed liquor company would manufacture vodka, gin, whiskey or any other type of alcohol.

And while the site’s story was based entirely on an anonymous and unaccountable “insider,” Simpson’s rep, speaking on the her behalf, went on the record with Gossip Cop to say there was “no truth” whatsoever to the report. And now 365 days later, it remains 100 percent false that Simpson and Johnson were becoming “booze moguls” with their own alcohol brand.

Admittedly, we were not entirely surprised since RadarOnline has a spotty history when it comes to reporting about Simpson. In August, for instance, the site swore up and down that Simpson was making her “singing comeback” on her sister Ashlee’s new reality show, “Ashlee + Evan.” But, of course, the series’ six-episodes ended in October and there was no musical performances by her on the program. Shortly before that tall tale, the same blog posted an absurd story about how Simpson spends $1.2 million a year on the food delivery service Postmates.

And though Simpson is now pregnant, that outlet contended in December 2016 and again in May 2017 how she and Johnson were expecting the third child then. Time proved those claims wrong, much like the article about her launching a liquor brand is clearly still untrue. From time to time, Gossip Cop looks back at stories from one year ago to illustrate for readers how the truth eventually bears itself out.
