A sensational tabloid story alleging there’s “fears” for the well-being of Jessica Simpson is fake news. Gossip Cop can explain how this report originated and why it’s wrong.

“Fears For Jessica,” reads a headline in the current edition of OK!, which states, “After a bizarre and unsettling appearance on ‘Ellen,’ friends are wondering what’s wrong with Jessica Simpson.” The accompanying article alleges that when the singer appeared on the talk show last month, “fans were concerned to see not just the echoes of the lovable ditz from ‘Newlyweds,’ but a woman who was slurring her speech, constantly giggling and leaving a bewildering Ellen DeGeneres staring into the camera as if to say, ‘Are you seeing this?'”

Now more than a week after the broadcast, the gossip magazine asserts “friends are worried her bizarre behavior may be the result of boozing or even pill-popping.” One so-called “pal” is quoted as saying, “Some people are convinced Jessica was drunk. And if she was mixing alcohol with something like Adderall or Xanax that would be even worse. Someone needs to figure out what’s going on with her.”

First off, if this “pal” was really a friend of Simpson’s, he or she would know what is and isn’t going on with the star. And if this “pal” was really “worried” about her, he or she wouldn’t be gossiping about her health in a tabloid. Yet this supposed source goes on to claim to the outlet that sister Ashlee has “already tried talking to Jess about her boozing, but she freaked out.” The publication further maintains the aforementioned “friends” are now “begging” husband Eric Johnson to “stage an intervention.”

But it’s not Simpson who needs an intervention. It’s OK!, which is seemingly addicted to spreading fake news. Yes, Simpson’s interview with DeGeneres raised eyebrows, but it wasn’t out of the norm. It was actually indicative of the silly personality the songstress-turned-designer has shown for years and years. In fact, Simpson was similarly accused of acting drunk during an HSN appearance in 2015. But she wasn’t boozing before either TV gig. She was merely being her usual self.

Real friends of Simpson, Gossip Cop is told, don’t have “fears” about her well-being because they know this is just her persona, not something that is the result of “boozing or pill-popping.” When OK! wonders if Simpson is “loopy or liquored up,” the tabloid knows it’s the former as the star has been this way during TV appearances for well over a decade. And when the magazine points to her “fluctuating figure,” it engages in body shaming and willfully ignores the reasons outside of drugs and alcohol that can cause weight changes.

The only real news is that Simpson acted like her typical self during an appearance on “Ellen.” That innocent interview is just being used to peddle fake news from the same outlet that wrongly claimed just days ago that Simpson was pregnant with her third baby. But she’s hopped up on alcohol and pills while expecting? Please. This latest tale is just “more nonsense,” Gossip Cop is told.
