Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox have undoubtedly discussed her divorce from Justin Theroux. But did the actress really say in a public place that she shouldn’t have married him? That’s the premise of a story from this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop can explain how it’s obvious the report was made-up.

A headline in the National Enquirer exclaims, “Jennifer’s Bombshell Confession: I Should Never Have Married Him!” The article kicks off with another purported quote from Aniston, “I was married to a monster!” The magazine claims the actress was overheard making these remarks “during an emotional heart-to-heart” with Cox in a “hotel lobby in West Hollywood.”

“Jennifer needed to get her feelings out in the open,” a so-called “insider” alleges to the outlet, going on to contend, “She told Courteney she now realizes Justin was a monster who was using her pretty much the whole time they were together.” Continues this supposed source, “The fact that Justin’s gone on to date a ton of girls, including their mutual friend Emma Stone, immediately after they split has only confirmed Jen’s worst nightmare — that she should never have married him.”

This purported “spy” further describes Theroux as “hyper-sensitive and controlling,” as well as “extremely vain and self-obsessed.” But it’s awfully odd for the publication to have a “spy” who supposedly saw Aniston “baring her soul” in a hotel lobby also be someone who knows all about Theroux’s personal life. And that’s not the only problem with this narrative.

As Gossip Cop has already reported, Theroux hasn’t been dating “their mutual friend.” In fact, Stone herself told WWD recently that he’s like her “brother.” Also significant is that the tabloid never names the West Hollywood hotel where Aniston and Cox were allegedly overheard talking, nor is any date given for this supposed chat. Perhaps that’s because Aniston has actually been filming a comedy in Montreal for the last two weeks, and hasn’t been seen at any Los Angeles hotels.

Furthermore, while it’s not far-fetched to claim the “Friends” star has shared her candid and blunt feelings about Theroux, good and bad, with Cox, the notion that she was seen having such an intimate conversation in a public place is a bit out of the realm of possibility. Additionally, in a story about Aniston being single and focusing on herself and work, People recently reported that she is “happily moving on with her life.” That makes it even harder to believe she’s spending her time publicly bashing Theroux in hotel lobbies.

Remember, when Aniston and Theroux announced their separation back in February, they specifically pointed out that “the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent.” They warned fans, “Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative.” It seems the National Enquirer has indeed invented a fictional tale, one that even Aniston’s own rep denies is true.
