Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts never got into a fight that divided Hollywood, but exactly one year ago today, a tabloid came up with that phony narrative. Gossip Cop debunked the story when it first emerged. It remains false.
On October 27, 2018, NW falsely claimed Aniston and Roberts were feuding and their famous friends were all choosing sides. The supposed battle was said to be over who's TV series would be a bigger hit. As we noted last year, the premise made very little sense. Roberts' Amazon show Homecoming debuted in November 2018, while Aniston's Apple series The Morning Show is premiering next month, a full year later. The two shows aren't in any sort of competition with each other. In fact, production on The Morning Show didn't wrap until this past May, a full six months after the magazine came up with its fake storyline.
Still, a so-called "source" told the tabloid last year that Aniston and Roberts' rift had "become awkward for all of their mutual friends," including Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon. All three actresses were were said to be siding with Aniston because they felt they had no other choice. George Clooney, however, was said to be on Team Roberts because his friendship with his Ocean's Eleven co-star was "stronger." Another A-lister said to be in Roberts' corner was Meryl Streep.
Not only did Aniston's spokesperson tell us on the record that the feud rumors were nonsense, but the same week they emerged, Aniston and Roberts both attended the InStyle Awards. E! News, which covered the event, reported that the two actresses "spent a lot of time" together during the show, and were spotted "chatting together during the intermission." Despite the magazine's poorly-timed story, it was already clear last October that the two stars get along great.
Just last week, Aniston gave a shoutout to Roberts' 1999 movie Notting Hill in a funny Instagram post. The Friends star referenced that film's iconic line, "I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her," but offers her own variation on it. If Aniston was in some sort of vicious feud with Roberts, it goes without saying that she wouldn't be referencing one of the fellow actress's movies.
In the time since we corrected NW's story last year, the outlet has thrown Roberts into imaginary feuds with both Charlize Theron and Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, the tabloids have created so many fake feuds between Aniston and Witherspoon, her co-star on The Morning Show, that we dedicated an entire article to the topic. This recurring idea that Aniston and Roberts don't get along with each other or anyone else is baseless.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
