John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston's short-lived relationship ended well over a decade ago, but the tabloids clearly never got the message. Maybe it's because Mayer spoke far more fondly about Aniston than he did about Jessica Simpson, another high-profile relationship he had. Or, maybe it's just because the gossip industry needs to fill page space with something. In any case, here's a few of our favorite absurd Aniston/Mayer rumors that Gossip Cop has debunked in the past couple of years.
In 2018, NW kicked things off by claiming that Aniston and Mayer were back together. As proof, the tabloid offered what was supposed to be a picture of Mayer and Aniston on a dinner date together. In fact, as Gossip Cop pointed out, it was an image of Aniston out with her now ex-husband, Justin Theroux, with Mayer photoshopped in Theroux's place. We also checked in with a source close to the situation, who assured us the story was total nonsense. There was no truth at all to this claim.
That December, OK! published a bogus story alleging Mayer and Aniston were reuniting, having met up for drinks at the Beverly Hills Hotel. A suspicious tipster apparently told the magazine that both stars were excited to see where things would go. The "sources" went on to make the ridiculous statement that Mayer even asked Aniston's ex-husband Brad Pitt for "permission to date Jen." Of course, every part of this bizarre story was a lie. A spokesperson for Aniston confirmed on the record for Gossip Cop that nothing of the sort was going on.
In March 2019, OK! returned to this tired fiction, again dragging Pitt into the mix by claiming that Aniston was casually dating both Mayer and Pitt at the same time. According to the usual untrustworthy, unnamed "insiders" tabloids always use for evidence, the actress had been seeing both exes since they attended her 50th birthday party in February. Aniston allegedly told Mayer that he needed to "keep his mouth shut" to the media about their relationship if he wanted to be with her, and he agreed. Which is convenient, as it would allow OK! to make a claim like this with absolutely no proof. However, Gossip Cop checked in with Aniston's spokesperson again, who once again laughed off the rumor as totally imaginary.
Rather than looking for something that's actually true to talk about, OK! has chosen instead to take this same rumor and just keep adding more men into it. As recently as this week, the tabloid claimed that Aniston was torn between not two but three exes: Pitt, Mayer, and Theroux. Aniston apparently "can't deny" her feelings for all three after "all the attention" they've been giving her. If you're wondering, which you shouldn't be, an anonymous "insider" is here to assure us that "Brad is leading the race" for the Friends star's heart. As we've pointed out before, none of this is true, with an Aniston rep once again shutting down the rumor. That rep must be getting pretty tired of having to keep debunking the same tired stories over and over like a game of tabloid Whack-A-Mole.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
