Jennifer Aniston never sued over a musical parody of “Friends,” despite a report a year ago. Exactly 12 months ago, Gossip Cop confirmed the actress had no intention of filing a lawsuit over a silly stage show. Now the passage of time has proven our reporting was correct.

On August 17, 2017, we called out the National Enquirer for a story about an off-Broadway production that was set to parody “Friends,” much like the same producers had done with “Saved by the Bell,” “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and other TV program. The supermarket tabloid maintained Aniston was upset about the plans, and ready to get her legal team involved. “Her lawyers are going to be taking a close look at the show,” a so-called “source” was quoted as saying.

Referencing how the hit NBC sitcom turned Aniston into an A-list star, the magazine’s alleged tipster went on, “Jen protects her brand vigorously. Rachel made her a star and is still paying her bills.” The untraceable insider further insisted, “Jen wants nothing to mess with that legacy and will not hesitate to take legal action if she doesn’t like the way she is portrayed on stage.”

As Gossip Cop pointed out, however, Aniston didn’t own anything have to do with “Friends” or her character, so she personally wouldn’t have grounds to sue. Additionally, parody falls under “fair use,” meaning it’s legal for others to satirize or spoof copyrighted works. With that in mind, it was no surprise when a rep for Aniston confirmed to Gossip Cop that this tale was “completely bogus,” and she had no plans to sue the production. Now 12 months have gone by, and it’s apparent she never did.

In fact, FRIENDS! The Musical Parody premiered a few months after this story, and it was so successful, its run was extended twice. The musical’s closing date was last month, at which point it played more than 200 shows. Quite clearly, Aniston never filed a lawsuit and never got in the way.

That said, the beloved series is still very much on her mind. In Aniston’s September cover story for InStyle, she was asked about the TV program possibly coming back. “Before that show ended, people were asking if we were coming back. Courteney [Cox] and Lisa [Kudrow] and I talk about it. I fantasize about it,” she admitted, adding, “It really was the greatest job I ever had.”

Aniston went on to joke, “If we give it some time, Lisa, Courteney, and I could reboot ‘The Golden Girls’ and spend our last years together on wicker furniture.” Who knows, perhaps that would one day lead to a musical parody, too.
