Jennifer Aniston‘s divorce from Justin Theroux was a surprisingly tame process, and the two even reunited after their separation to bury their dog together. Of course, reality has never stopped the tabloids, and one particular angle they seem to enjoy is attacking Aniston’s friendship with former Friends co-star Courteney Cox over her friendliness with Theroux. Here are a few of those rumors Gossip Cop has busted.
In June, Heat published a bizarre story claiming Aniston was ending her friendship with Cox over her commenting on one of Theroux’s Instagram posts. Theroux had posted a photo of himself grilling meat, to which Cox commented, “Nice BBQ bro!” That’s the entire story.
The outrageous rumor was based on one anonymous “insider,” who asserted that Aniston was devastated over Cox’s supposed refusal to totally cut ties with Theroux. Gossip Cop ran the story the by Aniston’s spokesperson, who went on the record to tell us that it was a complete “fabrication” and that Aniston and Cox’s friendship was as strong as ever. Besides, like we pointed out earlier, Aniston and Theroux are on good terms themselves, so it’s nonsensical to claim that she’d cut a friend out of her life for a benign Instagram comment.
In August, Gossip Cop called out Woman’s Day for a phony story about Aniston being furious at Cox for attending Theroux’s birthday party. The source of the story was a series of paparazzi photographs showing Cox briefly visiting Theroux’s apartment over his birthday weekend. This, according to the tabloid’s mysterious “tipster,” was seen as a “total betrayal” by Aniston.
The article stops short of accusing Cox of any flirtatious behavior with Theroux, but it boldly referred to her as the only one of Aniston’s “West Coast friends” to continue to be pals with Theroux. Gossip Cop checked with Aniston’s spokesperson, who dismissed it as “complete nonsense.” It was just another total misportrayal of Aniston’s relationship with both her friend and her ex.
A week later, OK! came up with the outlandish idea that Cox was only friendly with Theroux to get revenge on Aniston for working on a new show with Reese Witherspoon. This bizarre revenge plot, according to the tabloid, included not only attending, but planning Theroux’s birthday party. Once again, the gossip media dragged up a blatantly false “betrayal” narrative about Cox and Aniston.
According to the outlet, it all culminated in a teary phone call between the two Friends stars. In reality, however, there was no evidence of Cox planning any birthday events for Theroux. Meanwhile, Aniston and Cox had vacationed together in June, and even celebrated the Fourth of July together — after filming for Aniston’s new Apple show had completed. The publication couldn’t even bother to get a correct timeline of Aniston and Cox’s relationship. The total lack of fact-checking is a clear theme in every one of these stories.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
