Do Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt “pray together”? That was a magazine’s claim from exactly one year ago today. At the time, Gossip Cop noted it was untrue, and now 12 months later it’s even clear the story was wrong.

On April 14, 2018, Heat reported Pitt and Aniston were becoming “closer” again because of the “spiritual” time they were spending together. The publication further expressed, “Exes who pray together, stay together.” Specifically, the outlet said they were reconnecting romantically through the higher power of meditation, and that Pitt’s “spiritual guru” was Aniston, who had been practicing the calming technique for years.

The publication then went on to assert it had a source who shared how Pitt was using meditation to help maintain his sobriety. As for Aniston, the same anonymous tipster claimed the former “Friends” star suggested to her ex-husband that they could also use the practice for “healing together.” In reality, though, the tabloid’s tale was nothing more than fan-fiction.

At the time it was written 365 days ago, the exes hadn’t even seen each other in a very long time. And while 10 months later Pitt would make a cameo at Aniston’s 50th birthday party, before that landmark occasion for the actress, they weren’t spending time with one another, and most especially not praying together. Additionally, Pitt, who’s an atheist, has credited therapy with helping him remain sober and nothing related to spirituality.

Around the time the article came out about Aniston and Pitt doing meditation together, their reps assured Gossip Cop that talk of them reuniting was mere fantasy, and that’s even more apparent a year later. Curiously, one week after that phony story, the same tabloid published another a piece about how Aniston was “betrayed” again by Pitt, who was dating Neri Oxman. Of course, as Gossip Cop was among the first to note, Pitt and Oxman never dated, a point the MIT professor herself would later make publicly in an interview.

Last June, Heat attempted to again drag the two exes back together. It contended Pitt asked Aniston to meet his kids while he had custody of them during the summer of 2018, and that his ex-wife was “keen” to do so. That too was a complete “fabrication,” Aniston’s rep told us. It sometimes feels like the magazine is just guessing what is or might be happening between Pitt and Aniston, and then simply prays that it comes true. Unfortunately for the outlet, much of what’s been claimed is provably false.

When Gossip Cop looks back at articles from last year, it’s not to pat ourselves on the back and show how our fact-checking has held up over time, while the tabloids’ reporting has not. It’s to point out red flags that readers should be looking for, as well as to help them discern which outlets they can and cannot trust for reliable information. And while Aniston and Pitt don’t, we pray the celebrity magazines will pay more attention to accuracy, knowing that we’ll hold them accountable for hours, days and at least a year later.
