The View Jeff Flake Interview

(ABC)

Jeff Flake appeared on “The View” on Monday, discussing Donald Trump and his decision to leave the Senate when his term ends. Check out the video below.

As Gossip Cop reported, Flake made an anti-Trump speech last month and announced he would not run for reelection. At the time, “The View” co-hosts appreciated his strong comments against the current administration, but questioned why he wouldn’t try to stay in Congress to fight for different polices. Now on the ABC talk show, the panelists interviewed the Arizona politician about the situation.

There was a lighthearted start to the segment, with Flake quipping about the cheers he received, “If we had an audience like this in the Senate gallery, I’d never leave.” More seriously, he said it was the “honor of my lifetime” to serve, but explained that he “could not speak out as I am now” if he was running for another term. “There’s no way you can be competitive in a Republican primary, particularly in a state like Arizona right now, if you don’t agree with the president’s position or if you don’t condone his behavior,” he argued.

Flake said “if I could tell the truth” during a campaign, then he would run. But he insisted a candidate cannot win in Arizona and other places “if you’re willing to step up and say this is not right, this is not normal.” He went on, “And it is not normal to have a president come out, like he did on Friday, and try to direct the FBI, the federal agencies, to go after former political opponents. That’s not normal and we shouldn’t condone it.”

Flake was also asked about the Texas church shooting and gun laws. The senator acknowledged that some of the weapons restrictions in place failed, saying of the gunman, “What he was convicted of in a military court should have shown up [in a background check] and apparently it didn’t.” The system, he said, “needs to be better.” And though he has an A-rating from the NRA, Flake pointed out, “I have supported things the NRA has been opposed to,” particularly mentioning the “No Fly, No Buy” policy, which calls for anyone on the no-fly list being prohibited from buying a gun.

And, referencing the Las Vegas shooting and the debate that ensued afterward about weaponry, Flake said he is against the sale of bump stocks. Watch the full discussion below.
