Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke had incredible chemistry in the first couple of seasons of Game of Thrones. As Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen, the actors electrified audiences as their characters fell in love, but not after an unsettling start to the marriage between the Khal and the Khaleesi. What Momoa did to get Clarke to relax on set was far sweeter and more fun than the scene itself.
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Clarke regaled the panel with a hilariously endearing story about her co-star. Way back in the first season of Game of Thrones, the two were still just getting to know each other, personally and professionally. One of the first scenes the actors filmed together was the brutal moment when Momoa's Drogo forcefully consummated his arranged marriage to Clarke's Daenerys. Obviously a scene like that is very difficult to film, physically and emotionally. Momoa knew he needed to break the tense mood.
"Obviously, there's nudity and you kind of have to try to lighten the mood," Clarke said. "So he decided to not use a modesty sock, but use a beautiful pink fluffy sock." If you're wondering what a modesty sock is, it's probably exactly what you're thinking. Actors use them to cover up their personal areas during intimate scenes. Momoa immediately lightened the mood and everyone on set relaxed — especially Clarke, who was still very early in her career and very nervous about the scene.
Momoa has also gleefully recalled the moment. The Aquaman star described the improvised modesty device as a "fluffy pink polka dot sock with different things" and told a crowd at a fan event that Clarke "was like, 'Jason has a fluffy pink thing on his [private part]. And they were like, 'Momoa, we need to get this shot,' and I was like, 'I don't see anything more appropriate than me having a good time. I mean, this is awkward. Just let me make her laugh and I'll try to get through this!'"
Laugh she did, and from that moment on, any tension between the actors was gone and a strong bond was solidified that remains to this day, almost a decade later. In October, Momoa visited The Graham Norton Show and told the host he makes sure to visit Clarke anytime he is in London, and over the years, both Clarke and Momoa have posted numerous photos together on social media. The entire cast of Game of Thrones seems to have an unusually tight bond, but the Mother of Dragons and the powerful Dothraki leader might have the strongest one.
