Jason Aldean, one of the headliners at this year’s Route 91 Festival, is reacting to the shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday. 50 people were killed and 200 more injured when a gunman opened fire at the three-day country music festival, prompting hundreds of panicked concertgoers to flee the scene. Aldean, who was performing on stage when machine gunfire could be heard, is sending his prayers to the victims of this horrific attack outside the Mandalay Bay Casino.

Stephen Paddock, the 64-year-old gunman who is said to be a “local resident,” fired shots from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel towards the Route 91 music festival late Sunday night. Eye-witnesses said they initially heard a noise “like firecrackers,” but it soon became apparent that a gunman was firing into the crowd. As well as a number of concertgoers, both on and off-duty police officers are said to be among the dead.

Shortly after the lone-wolf attack, Aldean’s team confirmed the star was safe after shots were fired during his festival performance. Alongside a photo of Las Vegas, Aldean later shared on Instagram, “Tonight has been beyond horrific. I still don’t know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that me and my crew are safe,” he wrote. “My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. #heartbroken #stopthehate.”

Other country music stars who performed at the event spoke out on Twitter as the incident unfolded in Las Vegas. Luke Combs wrote, “Active shooter at @Route91Harvest in Vegas. We’re safe. Love you guys.” Jake Owen tweeted, “Praying for everyone here in Vegas. I witnessed the most unimaginable event tonight. We are okay. Others aren’t. Please pray.” And Lauren Alaina said, “Praying for everyone at Route 91. That crowd was one of the best I’ve played for all year. This news is devastating. My camp is home & safe. I won’t be sleeping tonight. Instead I am going to pray and pray and pray for the people in Vegas.”
