James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared on “The View” on Friday to discuss their new porn-themed show, “The Deuce.” But they were also asked to talk about Donald Trump. Watch the video below.

“The Deuce” stars Gyllenhaal as a 1970s prostitute who joins the porn industry just as it begins to rise and become legalized. The HBO program also addresses the mob-related crime in New York City at the time, as well as the drug epidemic. Franco is in a dual role as twins who are caught up in the scene. Delivering the salacious description on the ABC talk show, Joy Behar cracked, “I’m starting to breathe heavy just from reading this intro.”

But rather than first discussing the new drama, Behar began by asking Gyllenhaal how she talks about Trump with her young daughters. She revealed that one of her children recently asked her what a “bitch” is, and recalled, “I was like, ‘A [bitch] is a woman who is very powerful and misunderstood by her community!’ And then I was like, ‘Okay, I need to like tone it down a little bit.'” The actress went on to say, “But then again, you’re like how do you explain to a 5-year-old that the president wants to send immigrant children back to countries they’ve never been to before?”

“I don’t know how political you want to get here, but I say to my littlest child that he’s a bully, that he’s doing a job that he doesn’t have a lot of experience at and that he isn’t curious about learning about it.” Franco, who is no longer on social media, said Trump won “partly due” to his use of Twitter. “Like anything, it can turn into an addiction. It will suck you in like nothing else, as you can see with many people, like our president… I just don’t see him stopping,” the actor said of Trump.

As for “The Deuce,” Sunny Hostin asked the pair how they made sure they weren’t glorifying porn or the sex industry. Franco responded, “If you watch the show, you’re not going to be like, ‘Wow, that’s hot.’ There’s a lot of sex, but it’s used, and the reason I pushed for more, is it’s used to show what it was actually like. And if you actually cut it out–” Gyllenhaal chimed in, “Then you’re normalizing it.” Continued Franco, “You’re giving a false impression. It’s turning it into Pretty Woman.”

Gyllenhaal also argued that “it’s good if the show actually does turn you on a little,” which prompted Franco to say that he can’t admit that. She went on to explain that porn and sex do turn people on, and this show examines how we’re then complicit in the downsides of exploiting people. Added Franco, “It’s an interesting subject because there is a lot of grey area… It is gratuitous [in films and TV]. It is not necessary. But on this show, like we were saying, if you don’t give an impression of what it’s actually like, you’re doing the subject matter a disservice.” Check out the video below.
