James Comey is testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday. Watch the live stream below.

As Gossip Cop has reported, Comey was fired as the FBI director by Donald Trump in early May in the midst of the investigation into the president’s campaign’s ties to Russia. After the firing, Trump threatened Comey with alleged secret tapes, but never produced any of the supposed material. It was later reported the president had asked the non-partisan FBI head for “loyalty,” and to stop the investigation into Michael Flynn. Another report claimed Trump called Comey a “nut job,” and had told Russian officials that firing him eased the pressure he was facing over questions about collusion during the election.

Now Comey is set to give his side of the story, a process that already started on Wednesday. His opening statement was released one day before the official hearing, confirming that Trump did, in fact, ask for loyalty and an end to the Flynn investigation. In the prepared remarks, Comey states, “The President said, ‘I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.’ I didn’t move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed. We simply looked at each other in silence. The conversation then moved on, but he returned to the subject near the end of our dinner. At one point, I explained why it was so important that the FBI and the Department of Justice be independent of the White House.”

In another portion, Comey recalls, “He then said, ‘I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.’ I replied only that ‘he is a good guy.’… I did not say I would ‘let this go.'” He later asserts, “On the morning of March 30, the President called me at the FBI. He described the Russia investigation as ‘a cloud’ that was impairing his ability to act on behalf of the country. He said he had nothing to do with Russia, had not been involved with hookers in Russia, and had always assumed he was being recorded when in Russia. He asked what we could do to ‘lift the cloud.'”

Just from those portions of the statement, and others, questions have been raised about whether Trump’s actions rise to the impeachable offense of obstruction of justice. At today’s hearing, Comey will be asked about these issues and more under oath. The proceedings are scheduled to begin on Capitol Hill at 10 a.m. Eastern. Check out the live stream below.
