Jake Gyllenhaal discussed his Boston marathon movie, Stronger, on Friday’s “Today” show. He was joined by Jeff Bauman, whom he plays in the film. Check out the video below.

On April 15, 2013, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 200 more. Among the injured victims was Bauman, who was at the race to watch his girlfriend compete. He ultimately lost both of his legs in the terror attack. Stronger, based on Bauman’s memoir, tells the story of that fateful day and his recovery. In addition to Gyllenhaal, the film stars “Orphan Black” actress Tatiana Maslany in the role of Bauman’s girlfriend.

Both men appeared live on “Today” to talk about bonding over the emotional project. “It was very surreal,” Bauman said of watching Gyllenhaal play him on-screen. The actor commented, “I felt a huge responsibility, not only to Jeff, first and foremost, but to his family and the city of Boston and to anybody who really saw that photograph [of Bauman after the attack], for anyone who had any feelings for what happened to him that day.” He went on, “I think, for me, what I discovered is his incredible sense of humor, which I guess wasn’t a surprise, but I realized that’s really what got him through all of this. I think that’s what’s in the movie. And also just the incredible community around him.”

Bauman went on to call it “amazing” to have the film’s premiere at his rehabilitation center, noting that some of his real-life caretakers have cameos in the movie. “All that stuff really hits me hard, and it’s like, ‘woah,'” he admitted. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, Bauman’s humor was actually on display during the chat, with jokes about the teleprompter and having energy for the morning show. He also cracked that Gyllenhaal’s Boston accent was just “alright.” Watch the video below!
