Hunter Plake The Voice Svmifinals Video

Hunter Plake covered U2’s “With Or Without You” for his Top 8 performance on Monday’s “The Voice,” earning a standing ovation. Check out the video below.

Plake has made it to the semifinal round of the NBC competition by performing reimagined versions of well-known songs. His unique arrangements, combined with his emotion-fueled stage presence, seems to have won over America so far. After Plake reinvented “Higher Love” last week, he placed number nine on the iTunes singles chart.

But despite a seemingly easy road through season 12 thus far, Plake went into tonight’s live broadcast knowing half of the contestants would be eliminated on tomorrow’s results show. To make the Final Four, he and coach Gwen Stefani worked on perfecting his interpretation of one of U2’s big hits. In rehearsal, Stefani urged him to “take it to the next place” for his penultimate turn on the stage, and appreciated him hewing more to the melody than usual. Plake said he just wanted to “honor” the supergroup for how much they’ve influenced him.

That was apparent in the live performance, which kicked off the two-hour broadcast. Plake earned a standing ovation from all four coaches, after which Blake Shelton said, “Dude, that is by a mile your best vocal performance you’ve had on the show. You honored the original, but when you open your mouth, you don’t sound like anyone else.” Alicia Keys felt she was at Plake’s own concert, and Adam Levine noted the “straightforward production.”

Stefani added, “I just want America to realize that Hunter is so talented. Not only can he produce, write, he’s so collaborative. And this time, we just wanted to show off the vocal.” Watch the performance below, as well as Plake’s duet with Aliyah Moulden.
