Are Gwen Stefani and Fergie performing a duet at the Grammys after ending a purported feud? A report from the tabloids asserts the two singers have decided to "bury the hatchet." Gossip Cop looked into the story and found quite a few errors.
According to OK!, a "long-simmering feud" between Stefani and Fergie "has been put to bed and the pop stars are even discussing teaming up for a performance at the Grammys this month." The gossip magazine alleges their supposed "rivalry ignited when Fergie started her solo career with hits that seemed influenced by Gwen's sound." Contends a so-called "insider," "[They] rubbed each other the wrong way for years. They just never saw eye to eye."
But the outlet claims that "when Fergie was in talks to join 'The Voice,' she and Gwen started talking." The publication's alleged source explains, "They're both moms with marriages that ended suddenly. That bonded them." And now, maintains the purported tipster, Fergie is "all about female empowerment... and can't wait to kick butt with Gwen on stage."
Not so fast. There's a number of problems with these contentions. First off, Stefani and Fergie have never been in any kind of real feud. Music critics occasionally compared their music in the 2000s, but there's no evidence there was ever an actual dispute between them. That's why the tabloid has no examples and only speaks generally about a "rivalry."
Second, it was the "American Idol" reboot for which Fergie was in talks, not "The Voice." And given that Stefani has nothing to do with "Idol," that couldn't have been the way they supposedly "started talking." Lastly, the first Grammys performers for the upcoming 2018 ceremony were just announced on Thursday and neither Stefani nor Fergie is on the list.
Of course, with many names still to sign on, it's certainly possible they could be added to the line-up in the coming weeks. But Gossip Cop checked in with a rep for Stefani, who exclusively told us there's no joint Grammy performance in the works. The spokesperson was also unaware of any "feud." We'll update should anything change, but Gossip Cop suspects the same tabloid that repeatedly lied this week about Stefani being "married" does not have accurate insight on anything that may or may not be going on with her and Fergie.
Gossip Cop believes there to be elements of truth, but the story is ultimately misleading.
