An ongoing narrative in the tabloids contends that one reason Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have not gotten married yet is because Stefani wants her previous marriage to Gavin Rossdale annulled by the Catholic Church. Without the annulment, the Catholic Church would not recognize their marriage. Despite endless stories claiming this, Gossip Cop has consistently debunked these false allegations. Here are five times we’ve busted the tabloids on the subject.

It started back in March 2019 when Us Weekly reported Stefani wanted a marriage with Shelton to be recognized by the church. The publication quoted an unnamed source as saying the No Doubt singer had begun “the formal process” of having her marriage to Rossdale annulled. Apparently, at least according to the questionable reporting of the tabloid, Rossdale was upset about this because he didn’t want Stefani and Shelton “pushing their beliefs” on his three children with his ex-wife. Gossip Cop pointed out that at the time, Stefani stated she was in no hurry to marry her boyfriend.

A week later, the National Enquirer upped the ante by alleging Stefani was “begging” Pope Francis to annul her marriage. A so-called insider told the publication, “Gwen is planning a trip to the Vatican in Rome with Blake and her parents to make her appeal [to Pope Francis] in person,” but like the first article, Rossdale was fighting the process. Gossip Cop checked with Stefani’s rep, who told us the report was bogus. The singer was never planning to travel to Rome to make demands of the pope.

A month later, in April, In Touch published a similar story saying Stefani and Shelton’s wedding was delayed because she was waiting to get her marriage to Rossdale annulled. An alleged insider claimed Stefani “found out that the annulment could take another year, which has her extremely frustrated.” For the first time, a tabloid added a twist, claiming Shelton was getting frustrated by the delays as he didn’t think a church wedding was important. Gossip Cop once again stepped in to clear up the false rumors by pointing out that the couple wasn’t even engaged.

In July, the Enquirer was back on the case with a phony report claiming Rossdale was blocking Stefani and Shelton from getting married with the annulment. That article purported that Rossdale “went ballistic” because it meant his marriage would have “never existed.” This article was four months after the phony tales began and Stefani and Shelton still weren’t engaged, nor had Stefani applied for an annulment. Gossip Cop busted the story after confirming with Stefani’s rep that the entire narrative remained untrue.

The Enquirer retreaded this same phony storyline again in October. Once again, the tabloid falsely alleged Shelton was “desperate” to walk down the aisle but Stefani insisted on waiting for the annulment, much to the frustration of the country star. Unbelievably, for the fifth time in seven months, Gossip Cop had to debunk the ongoing saga. It wasn’t true in March and it’s still not true today.
