Former President George W. Bush slammed current President Donald Trump over Russia, his immigration ban, and press issues on Monday’s “Today” show. Watch below.

Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, appeared live on the morning show to celebrate his new book, Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors. The collection features both written and painted tributes to veterans. But during the appearance, Bush was also asked about the current state of America.

He acknowledged, “The job’s a tough job. Everyone looks at the presidency one way when they campaign, and then they get into office and find there’s a reality to the job.” Pressed by Matt Lauer on the “enormous division” in the country and whether Trump has done anything to “heal” that rift, Bush noted “it’s only been one month in office” and “he’s got four years.” He added, “I think you have to take the man for his word that he wants to unify the country and we’ll see whether he’s able to do so.”

But that’s where he stopped cutting Trump some slack. Bush laughed when Lauer brought up Trump calling the media the “enemy of the American people.” The former commander-in-chief said, “I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy, that we need an independent media to hold people like me to account. I mean, power can be very addictive, and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power, whether it be here or elsewhere.”

As an example, Bush cited Vladimir Putin, whom Trump has defended many times, as a foreign leader against an independent press. “I think we all need answers,” Bush later said about Russian involvement in the presidential election, adding, “I’m am sure that the question needs to be answered. Lauer went on to reference Bush’s own pro-Muslim comments in the wake of 9/11 to ask about Trump’s so-called “Muslim ban.”

“It’s very important for all of us to recognize one of our great strengths is for people to be able to worship the way they want to or not worship at all,” Bush said. “A bedrock of our freedom is the right to worship freely.” He explained that terrorism is about ideology, not religion, and rejected bans on immigration.

Bush told Lauer, “I am for an immigration policy that’s welcoming and upholds the law.” He also disagreed with Trump’s Inauguration Day description of “American carnage.” The former president said, “The America I see often is the America that these vets represent, people willing to sacrifice for the greater good.” Check out the full video below.
