A tabloid report about George Clooney and Will Smith’s so-called “secret feud” is both late and wrong. Gossip Cop already debunked the nonexistent drama between the movie stars. We can once again set the record straight.

Last week, the Globe made up a story about Smith “trash-talking” Clooney behind his back out of jealousy. The magazine alleged that everyone in Hollywood knows about Smith’s supposed hatred of the fellow actor. It was further said that the insults had gotten back to Clooney, who wasn’t happy about being slammed by the star.

The outlet’s baseless story came from an anonymous and seemingly nonexistent “source,” but Gossip Cop checked in with Clooney’s spokesperson, who had zero knowledge of Smith ever saying anything derogatory about his client. Despite the magazine’s insistence that Smith and Clooney’s “feud” is well-known in Hollywood circles, Clooney’s own rep had never heard of such a thing.

Unfortunately, the National Enquirer is now regurgitating the false premise. The tabloid throws also throws in its own angle about Smith having a gripe with Clooney for turning down the co-starring role in 1998’s Wild Wild West. However, Clooney told Variety at the time of the film’s release that the reason he initially signed on was because he wanted to work with Smith, but he ultimately dropped out because he wasn’t right for the role. “The opportunity to work with Will [Smith] and [director] Barry [Sonnenfeld] was too exciting to pass up,” said the actor. “Ultimately, we all decided that rather than damage this project trying to retrofit the role for me, it was better to step aside and let them get someone else.”

Additionally, Clooney and Smith appeared quite chummy on the red carpet of the 2006 Producers Guild Awards. The stars were photographed laughing and chatting at the event, as well as posing for multiple pictures together. Meanwhile, Smith’s Wild Wild West co-star Salma Hayek celebrated Clooney’s birthday on Instagram last year. The photo she used for the tribute? A throwback image of herself hanging out with both actors. If the two were truly in an infamous Hollywood feud, it’s highly unlikely that Hayek would have included Smith in a photo honoring Clooney’s birthday.

It’s worth noting, the tabloids have a habit of creating nonexistent conflicts between Clooney and other male stars. Back in 2016, Gossip Cop busted the Enquirer’s sister outlet, OK!, for falsely claiming that the actor had a “long-running feud” with Tom Cruise. Last month, Cruise sent a message of support to Clooney following the actor’s motorcycle accident.
