George Clooney and Amal Clooney have donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center to support an initiative to combat hate groups in the United States. The couple announced the partnership Tuesday through their organization, the Clooney Foundation for Justice.

The actor and humanitarian lawyer’s $1 million grant comes in the wake of the deadly rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacists, neo-Nazis, the KKK and other hate groups violently protested the removal of Confederate statues. The incident resulted in the death of one female counter-protester, as well as dozens of injuries.

George told Gossip Cop, “Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.” The couple added in a statement, “We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States. What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.”

The Clooney Foundation for Justice was founded by the spouses in 2016 to fight for the rights of individuals in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world, as well as “advancing justice for marginalized and vulnerable communities targeted by hate.” The SPLC is a nonprofit organization specializing in civil rights, specifically taking down America’s extremist groups through tracking and litigation.

“Like George and Amal Clooney, we were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville,” SPLC President Richard Cohen said in a statement. “It was a reflection of just how much Trump’s incendiary campaign and presidency has energized the radical right. We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us at this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate.”
