Gal Gadot was honored by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins with the #SeeHer Award at the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards on Thursday. Watch the video below!

The presentation began with Jenkins calling Gadot a “dear friend.” The filmmaker said she could “attest” to the star’s “great work” and how she uses her “superpowers” for good. Jenkins went on to point out that Gadot did not take on Wonder Woman for fame or money. “She knew the great importance to this character and what she could mean to the universe if well done,” Jenkins said. She added, “I’m so proud for all that she does. She’s my real Wonder Woman.”

Following a taped tribute and additional remarks from Jenkins, Gadot took the stage to a standing ovation. “Oh wow, you can sit,” she told the star-studded crowd. “I’m gonna cry.” The actress said she was “blown away” to be in a room with people “I look up to, respect and admire.” She said that when she started her career, she was looking to play a “strong and independent woman, a real one.” Gadot noted, “The irony of this is that later I was cast as Wonder Woman and all of these characters I looked for I found in her.”

She expressed her pleasure at how Wonder Woman “inspired me and inspires other,” and went on to point out that, “This year, three of the top-grossing films were female-led.” She stressed, “Although this is progress, there is still a long way to go.” Gadot also emphasized, “As artists and filmmakers, I believe it is not only our job to entertain but our duty to inspire and educate for love and respect.” She then brought up the recent “movement in our industry and our society,” saying, “I want to share our award with all the women and men who stand for what’s right and those who can’t stand and speak for themselves.” Gadot declared, “I will never be silenced and we will continue to band together to make strides uniting for equality.”

It was announced in December that the actress would be bestowed with the special award, which “recognizes a woman that pushes boundaries and changes stereotypes in entertainment to accurately portray women.” With her iconic role in 2017’s Wonder Woman, Gadot was praised for “using her platform to encourage those in the entertainment industry and beyond to strive for fairness and parity across genders.”

Bob Liodice, CEO of the Association of National Advertisers, which sponsors the award, said in a statement, “We’re honored to recognize Gal this year with the second annual #SeeHer Award. Not only was she able to challenge stereotypes in film and find success by starring in one of the biggest blockbusters this year, she also used that success to shine a light on her own industry and push the boundaries on gender equality in real life.”

As Gossip Cop reported, Viola Davis received the inaugural #SeeHer Award at the Critics Choice Awards in 2016. Vanessa Hudgens also received a version of the #SeeHer Award at the Teen Choice Awards last August. Check out full video of Gadot’s acceptance speech below.
