Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy are not divorcing after the actress completes her jail sentence later this month, despite an untrue tabloid story. Gossip Cop looked into the claim and we can debunk it. The spouses of more than two decades aren’t headed for a split.
An article in Woman’s Day asserts that Huffman and Macy haven’t been wearing their wedding rings and are headed for a divorce after the conclusion of Huffman’s 14-day prison sentence, which is scheduled to start at the end of October. The Desperate Housewives star pleaded guilty for her part in the college admissions cheating scandal, admitting that she paid bribes to have her daughter’s SAT scores boosted. Huffman was the first person sentenced in the wide-ranging scandal that has snared dozens of well-to-do parents, including Lori Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli.
The tabloid quotes an anonymous source as saying, “[Macy] has been doing his absolute best for the sake of their two daughters to be Felicity’s rock. But he had no idea she’d done what she did and he’s still fuming about it. He’s a good man and he loves her be he’s not sure he can ever trust her again.” The publication goes on to say that when Huffman’s sentence is completed, Macy, who was not named in the scandal, will be less forgiving of his wife’s transgressions. Nothing could be further from the truth.
While the tabloid depends on a third-hand account from an unnamed “source,” Macy himself said in a letter to the judge in Huffman’s case prior to her sentencing that he plans to fully support her. The Shameless actor wrote, “Felicity found a wonderful family therapist and we’ve all been going for the last few months. There is much work to be done and some of the hurt and anger will take years to work through, but we are making progress.” Macy concluded the letter by saying, “every good thing in my life is because of Felicity Huffman.”
That hardly sounds like a man on the verge of divorcing his wife, despite what the outlet’s so-called “insider” alleges. Gossip Cop also checked in with the couple’s spokesperson, who refutes the report entirely. A rep for the spouses tells us on their behalf and on the record that the divorce claims are “not true.”
This false narrative about the couple breaking up over the scandal has been a popular one for the tabloids. Gossip Cop has busted quite a few stories on this exact subject over the last few months. Most recently, in June, we corrected Life & Style for a bogus report alleging Huffman and Macy were leading separate lives and barely speaking to each other. Like this current story, the premise came from an unnamed “insider” who clearly had no idea what was going on in the couple’s private life. Everything the source said was disputed by scores of evidence at the time, and now, by Macy’s letter to the judge.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
