Are Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy really headed for a divorce over the college admissions cheating scandal? That’s the claim in one of this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop looked into the situation and we can set the record straight.
Earlier this month, Huffman was one of 50 people charged in a nationwide scheme that saw wealthy parents allegedly paying bribes to get their kids into elite colleges. The “Desperate Housewives” star was indicted for allegedly paying $15,000 to have a proctor fix incorrect answers on her daughter’s SAT test. Macy wasn’t charged in the case, although he’s listed on an affidavit stating “Huffman and her spouse agreed to the plan.”
According to Life & Style, the couple’s marriage is on the rocks amid the fallout from the controversy. In a bizarre twist, the magazine says Huffman somehow discovered that her husband was using the celebrity dating app Raya and it led to a major battle between the spouses of more than 20 years.
“Felicity got into a huge screaming match with William over it and accused him of cheating,” a supposed source tells the magazine. “Felicity needs William more than ever and was devastated when she heard the rumors. They couldn’t have come at a worse time.” The alleged insider adds, “Those close to them fear that divorce could be in the cards.”
The tabloid’s story is based on claims from an anonymous tipster, but Gossip Cop checked in with a joint rep for both Huffman and Macy, and we’re assured they’re not headed for a split over the scandal. The couple’s spokesperson says the claim is simply “not true.” Even if the spouses were having marital issues, which they aren’t, the idea that the actor would be jumping on a dating app at this time is flat-out absurd. The outlet also fails to explain exactly how the actress supposedly caught her husband using the app.
Despite what the outlet’s untraceable “source” claims, the couple’s rep confirms their marriage isn’t in trouble. In fact, there’s evidence showing otherwise. Huffman and Macy were photographed holding hands while arriving at a Los Angeles courthouse earlier this month. It’s clear the couple is putting on a united front amid the actress’s legal troubles. As noted above, Macy wasn’t named in the cheating scandal, so he’d have no reason to accompany his wife to court other than to show his support.
It appears the tabloid is trying to take Huffman’s cheating scandal, and give Macy one of his own. But the veteran actor has been nothing but faithful to his wife before and after the college admissions controversy. The tabloid is simply trying to capitalize on the controversy with a phony story about the couple’s marriage.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
