Alex Rodriguez was released by the New York Yankees, the baseball player announced on Sunday during a press conference at Yankee Stadium, and now fans are reacting to his forced retirement. Rodriguez is set to play his final game in New York on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays. See reactions and video of A-Rod’s announcement below.

During the press conference, Rodriguez announced, “I’m saying goodbye.” He noted, “We all want to play forever,” but “accepting the end gracefully is part of being a professional athlete.” Rodriguez was clear that it was “the Yankees’ decision,” and that he’s “at peace with it.” The baseball star will, however, sign an agreement with the Yankees organization as a special advisor, helping to nuture and mentor the next generation of players. He also expressed during the press conference that at 41, he was proud to have played professional baseball for 22 years of his life.

Rodriguez had not been much of a presence this past season with a relatively low batting average of .204 and just nine homers. At the time of his release, Rodriguez has 696 career home runs, putting him 18 behind third place finisher Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755) and record-holder Barry Bonds (762). While he said at the press conference he would have liked to have hit 700 home runs, Rodriguez again noted he was “at peace” with missing that milestone. Under the deal, A-Rod will still be paid out his $20 million-a year salary for this year, as well as for the 2017 season.

And while Rodriguez helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series, he’s since been steeped in controversy for his admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs. As a result he was suspended in August 2013 and all of the 2014 season. He’s also has been plagued by a number of injuries over the past decade, including hip problems and a broken left hand in 2012.

A fan named ‏@vinnyvetrone tweeted, “People can say what they want, But Alex is one of the best players to ever step foot on a diamond. #ARod One fan named.” Another Twitter user with the handle @TheDonDrew wrote, “#AROD really owning some of his ups and downs. Another user named @YankeesWFAN felt, “Two goals met here: #Yankees wanted him off the roster and #ARod wanted his money. Both were fair. Both now are happening.” “Whatever #ARod does, it has been awesome being able to watch possibly the best player ever. Remember getting his Rookie Card when I was 13,” tweeted @BMonzoWFAN. And @CarmineSabia felt, “Its astounding how many perfect people who never broke any rules or laws are sitting in judgment of #ARod today. Still one of the best ever.” Gossip Cop will continue to add fan reactions to Alex Rodriguez being forced to retire from the Yankees. See video of A-Rod’s announcement below.
