As Gossip Cop has reported, Clair is one of a number of young singers in the NBC talent competition this year, but perhaps the one with the most moving backstory. Her journey on the show has been inspired by her father, who is battling cancer. All three of her performances before tonight were emotional songs sung in his honor. For the quarterfinals late last month, Clair performed “Wings” while playing the piano. All of the judges gave a standing ovation, and Mel B, who lost her own dad earlier this year, could be seen wiping away tears.

But not all of America was convinced Clair should stay in the running for the show’s $1 million prize. When the results were announced the following night, host Tyra Banks revealed the young girl was in danger of elimination after falling in the middle of the pack when the votes were tallied. Along with magician Eric Jones and singing group The Masqueraders, she was in jeopardy of going home unless winning either the Dunkin’ Save or the Judges’ Save. Fans were able to vote during the broadcast for which act they wanted to be redeemed and, thankfully, they chose Clair.

Now she’s on her way to the final round, provided she survives this week’s big cut. Before the performance, as Clair’s personal home movies were shown on screen, she said, “My dad inspires me to do what I love. He really wanted to be here, but right now my dad’s really sick. Just a lot of and things are happening. ‘America’s Got Talent’ is this bright light in our lives. Me being here has really given my dad something to look forward to. This song I’m singing tonight is a celebration of how much love we have for each other. And this will be a memory no one can ever take away from my family.”

After performing “Yours” by Ella Henderson as a string section accompanied her piano playing, Simon Cowell and Heidi Klum gave a standing ovation. The music mogul, whose voice actually cracked from emotion, said afterward, “I’ve said this before, you are gutsy. You really, really are. Let me tell you something: This song was beautiful. Your voice was beautiful… I know who wrote this song, but you made it your version. Your tone, your pitch was stunning. It was laid-back. And let me tell you, your dad is going to be so proud of you.”

At that, the teen burst into tears. Klum then said, “Well, even though we’re in this big theater, you made it very intimate. You made it very personal. You made it very, very moving for all of us.” Mel B noted, “I think we forget, you’re only 13 years old… I have to commend you on your courage and your confidence.” She added, “I just hope America votes for you.” Watch the video below!
