Eric Dane opened up about his battle with depression while co-hosting the “Today” show on Monday. Check out the video below.

It was announced in late April that Dane was seeking treatment for depression, which led his TNT series “The Last Ship” to temporarily stop production. His rep said in a statement at the time, “Eric asked for a break to deal with personal issues. He suffers from depression and has asked for a few weeks of downtime and the producers kindly granted that request. He looks forward to returning.” When he joined his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters at a charity gala in June, he declined to speak to the press.

But now Dane is ready to discuss his mental health journey as he gears up for his show’s season 4 premiere, which is slated to air August 20. The program has already been renewed for a fifth season. On the “Today” show, Jenna Bush Hager brought up the subject by saying, “You took some time off from the show. Tell us a little bit about that.”

“I did,” Dane acknowledged before taking a deep breath. “Well, I took some time off. I was dealing with some depression, which was kinda odd to me. I felt very conflicted about it because I didn’t really feel like I had anything to be depressed about. Now I take a medication called Pristique, which I thought just sounded like a good mood, and the depression’s gone.”

Asked about the importance of taking mental illness seriously, the actor said, “You gotta listen to your body. It’s a very serious thing. Like I said, I felt very conflicted because I couldn’t figure out what I was depressed about. But it’s very real, and that was the scary thing, when you wake up and you’re like, ‘I don’t wanna get out of bed,’ you know?”

“I was seeing these doctors, thinking there was something physically wrong with me, because I never felt like that,” Dane revealed. “I mean, I dealt with depression throughout my life, but it was always manageable. I just felt like, you know, everyone kinda feels a little blue, but this just hit me like a truck. I had to take some time off. I went away, I took care of it, and I’m feeling great.” Watch the video below.
