Is Ellen DeGeneres retiring and already eyeing her replacement? That's the claim in one of this week's tabloids, which names Chrissy Teigen, Neil Patrick Harris and Ellie Kemper as possible candidates to host the daytime show. Gossip Cop looked into the report and can exclusively debunk it.
Life & Style alleges that after more than 16 years on the air, DeGeneres is "retiring from her Emmy-winning daytime talk show at wife Portia de Rossi's urging." The magazine further maintains the comedienne has "already drawn up a shortlist of superstars to fill her dancing shoes." Even though she would be leaving, the tabloid asserts DeGeneres wants the program to go on after her contract is up in 2020.
To that end, claims the magazine's source, "Ellen's reached out to a few guest hosts," including Kemper, Harris and Teigen, who have "filled in for her in the past." "It's not an easy decision, but it's one she'll be making soon," contends the tipster. Actually, Gossip Cop is told she's made a decision, and it's not to retire quite yet.
It's true DeGeneres' wife would like her to try other creative venues, instead of doing the talk show. In a December 2018 New York Times interview with DeGeneres, de Rossi was quoted as saying, "There are other things she could tackle." However, a production source exclusively tells Gossip Cop that DeGeneres has "no plans to retire."
Of course, one needs to consider the source of information of this latest tale. Life & Style has a poor track record when it comes to reporting about the daytime host. In January, for instance, Gossip Cop busted the outlet when it insisted DeGeneres was quitting her show to have kids with de Rossi. The tabloid quoted a supposed insider as saying Degeneres "decided to step back so that she and Portia can start a family." Of course, the talk-show host has stated publicly that she and de Rossi agreed early on in their relationship not to have kids.
It's also the same publication that falsely alleged in the past half-year that DeGeneres and de Rossi were living apart to save their marriage. Far from spending time away from each other, just two days ago, de Rossi posted video on Instagram of DeGeneres surprising her in Toronto. And in December, de Rossi shared a photo on Instagram of her and DeGeneres with a Christmas tree in the background, along with a caption, "Getting ready for our viewing party for my wife's brilliant Netflix special Relatable."
The outlet has been wrong before about DeGeneres, and it's wrong again. While she's considered not renewing her contract, Gossip Cop is assured she'll stay on after 2020. Maybe it's time for the magazine to retire its unreliable DeGeneres sources.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
