Ellen DeGeneres gave an interview late last year in which she discussed possibly leaving her hit talk show. Her wife, Portia de Rossi, thought the time was right to end the show and move on to something new. The tabloids had a field day.
In December 2018, DeGeneres sat down for an in-depth interview with the New York Times. In the interview, she was joined by de Rossi, who told the interviewer, “I just think she’s such a brilliant actress and stand-up that it doesn’t have to be this talk show for her creativity. There are other things she could tackle.” At the time, DeGeneres had just agreed to an option in her contract to extend the show’s run until 2020. There had been speculation that the comedian might be ready to hang it up after that.
In January, Life & Style asserted that DeGeneres was quitting her show to have kids with de Rossi. The story incorrectly speculated that when DeGeneres’ contract was up in 2020, she would retire to spend more time with her wife. A supposed insider claimed, “Ellen’s finally quitting Hollywood. After years of Portia begging her to leave her talk show behind, she’s finally relenting.” Gossip Cop debunked the story after checking with our source close to the talk show host, who told us it wasn’t true.
An April report in In Touch alleged DeGeneres and de Rossi were in a crisis over the TV host renewing her contract. That story introduced a theme that reoccurred over and over for the next few months in the tabloids. As a so-called “insider” told the outlet, “They’re fighting over the show – Portia wants Ellen to quit, but she won’t.” Our impeccable source told us the report was “wrong” and Gossip Cop once again busted the story as false.
In June, DeGeneres signed a new contract, taking the show into 2022. Of course, this led to a whole slew of new, equally phony reports about marital problems. Just a few days after the renewal was announced, OK! published a bogus report alleging DeGeneres and de Rossi were going to split over the contract. The tabloid’s dubious source on this story even claimed, “Portia decided to move out and clear her head for a bit.” Gossip Cop set the record straight, again. They weren’t breaking up and de Rossi never moved out.
As summer rolled on, Gossip Cop continued to debunk stories about de Rossi leaving DeGeneres over her talk show. The topic kept coming up though. In September, Star alleged DeGeneres was refusing to quit her show and move to Australia, where de Rossi is from. According to the phony report, de Rossi was “devastated” by DeGeneres renewing her contract and saw it “as a betrayal.” It was the same recycled nonsense all the tabloids had been churning all year. Once again, Gossip Cop debunked it. As we come to the end of the year – the couple is still very much together, DeGeneres is still hosting her show – and all the stories have been proven wrong.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
