A “$360 million divorce” for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi never happened. Exactly one year ago today, Gossip Cop debunked a report that falsely announced a split for the couple. Now time has since proven our reporting was correct.

On June 16, 2017, Gossip Cop busted In Touch when it tried to make hay of DeGeneres being spotted without her wedding ring. A so-called “insider” called it a “huge sign,” claiming, “Ellen took the ring off after she and Portia realized their issues couldn’t be worked out.” The magazine declared the marriage was “over,” and the supposed source insisted, “It’s happing. She and Portia are breaking up… There’s no turning back. It’s just a matter of time before the whole world knows.”

Of course, as Gossip Cop pointed out then, the tabloid had also announced nonexistent divorces for the stars in 2015 and 2016. And when it came to this 2017 report, we noted that DeGeneres was also without her wedding ring in an Instagram photo de Rossi had posted of the comedienne just days before the story was published. In other words, going ringless was not actually a “huge sign” about their relationship status at all.

And in the last 12 months, DeGeneres and de Rossi never divorced, just as we rightly said they wouldn’t. In fact, as opposed to breaking up, they seem to have only grown closer. Only weeks ago, DeGeneres and de Rossi took a trip to Africa, a vacation they documented on social media. And this August, they’ll mark their 10th wedding anniversary.

While In Touch often publishes wrong stories about various stars, the outlet is usually particularly out of touch when it comes to the television host and her wife. In January, Gossip Cop observed that 365 days had passed since the publication claimed DeGeneres and de Rossi were “starting a family.” Just months before the bogus divorce report, the magazine had published an equally phony story earlier last year that alleged they were “finally serious about having a baby.”

But a year went by and the couple never had a baby, much like a year has gone by and they never split. These kinds of significant flubs destroy the tabloid’s credibility. How can the outlet be trusted to accurately report on the pair going forward when it was so majorly wrong in the past? And the publication hasn’t even acknowledged either mistake, even though both cases warrant a correction and, especially in regards to the untrue divorce report, an apology. Gossip Cop doesn’t expect that to happen, but we’ll keep holding the magazine accountable for printing fiction over fact as necessary.
