Ellen DeGeneres is not in the process of choosing a successor to take over her talk show, despite a report claiming Katy Perry, Mario Lopez and Sean Hayes are being considered as possible replacements. Gossip Cop looked into the story and we’ve learned it’s entirely inaccurate.

According to Perez Hilton, DeGeneres is getting ready to retire and is working with NBC executives to find her replacement. The blogger contends that Perry, Lopez and Hayes are the three main names she’s pitched to the network. Perez speculates that Perry is in the running thanks to her gig as a judge on “American Idol.” Meanwhile, Lopez is a TV veteran who’s hosted “Extra” for more than a decade, and Hayes guest hosted “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last year.

Although it’s true DeGeneres has hinted she may step down from hosting her talk show when her contract expires in 2020, Gossip Cop has learned she’s not actively pursuing a replacement at this time. A trustworthy source involved in the production of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” tells us there haven’t been any discussions about possible successors. It’s worth noting, we’re further told there’s a good chance DeGeneres will renew her contract past 2020, so any talk of a replacement is very premature.

Speculation about who might replace DeGeneres should she leave her show has become a recurring theme in the gossip media, but most of the talk is baseless. Earlier this week, in fact, Gossip Cop busted OK! for wrongly reporting that DeGeneres was grooming Kristen Bell to take over her talk show. A production insider assured us that’s not the case.

Meanwhile, Gossip Cop called out Life & Style last month for claiming Neil Patrick Harris, Chrissy Teigen and Ellie Kemper were being eyed as possible replacements for DeGeneres. Once again, an impeccable production source assured us the comedian never reached out to any of those celebrities about taking the reins. The tabloids seem to be choosing famous names at random.

There have also been a number of false reports about the talk show host leaving before her contract expires. In February, Gossip Cop debunked a story alleging DeGeneres was quitting her show after facing backlash for defending Kevin Hart over the reemergence of his homophobic tweets from several years ago.

Prior to that, we shot down a phony article about DeGeneres quitting her talk show to have kids with wife Portia de Rossi. Whatever the future holds for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” you can expect the talk show host herself to make an official announcement at some point down the line. In the meantime, these countless articles on the subject have been either speculative or flat-out fabricated.
