Did Denzel Washington really say that President Donald Trump saved America from becoming a totalitarian police state? That's the claim coming from a website that frequently publishes fake news. Gossip Cop can exclusively set the record straight.
According to the unreliable blog YourNewsWire, the actor recently stated that the Untied States would have become an "Orwellian police state" if the Democrats had taken office. This is in reference to George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, set in a world in which the government is always watching. Washington's alleged comments are also in response to last week's Nunes memo, which suggested that the Democrats conspired with the FBI to spy on the Trump campaign.
The site quotes Washington as having told reporters at a press conference, "If the Democrats had won the election, we never would have found out they were using false documents to get warrants to spy on American citizens and political opponents." The actor supposedly went on to condemn Hillary Clinton for trying "to spy on the Trump team," before accusing all of the journalists in the room of also "colluding with the Clinton campaign."
"You've got to understand that we dodged a bullet when Clinton lost," Washington is further quoted as saying. "More than one bullet. We avoided a war with Russia, and we avoided the creation of an Orwellian police state." It should be noted, the untrustworthy site doesn't mention exactly when or where the actor made such comments. Also, if Washington really went on a pro-Trump rant at a press conference, it's highly unlikely that YourNewsWire would be the only outlet reporting it.
Regardless, Gossip Cop is exclusively assured by a source close to the actor on background that all of the quotes being attributed to him are fabricated. Washington never declared that Trump saved America from becoming a police state, nor did he bash Clinton and the Democrats over the Nunes memo. Unfortunately, we're not surprised by this bogus narrative. During the November 2016 election, there were several fake news stories about Washington endorsing Trump for president, which he never did.
In addition to being on a list of proven fake news sites, YourNewsWire is also known to offer inaccurate takes on the actor's political leanings. Gossip Cop recently busted the site for falsely claiming that Washington referred to former President Barack Obama as the "criminal-in-chief." This latest article surrounding his alleged devotion to Trump is more fake news.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
