Darius Hickman received a standing ovation after an emotional audition during the season 14 premiere of “So You Think You Can Dance” on Monday. Check out the video below!

After mixed reviews for season 13’s “The Next Generation, which focused on young dancers, it was announced in January that “SYTYCD” was renewed for a new season with its former age requirements. That meant contestants once again had to be between the ages of 18 and 30. At 18 years old, Hickman just made it in.

Speaking with host Cat Deeley before taking the stage, Hickman revealed his drug-addicted mother was imprisoned when he was just a toddler. He went to live with his aunt, witnessing her get assaulted in an abusive relationship. That aunt passed away three years ago, and now Hickman is living with his godmother.

At the start of his try-out, Nigel Lythgoe said, “I’m absolutely shocked at your story. It’s amazing you got through it. It is a tragic, tragic story. Yet somehow you’ve found dance through this and that’s taken you through… I’m keeping my fingers crossed because you deserve something good in your life. Go out there and impress us.”

Impress he did. Hickman executed a moving routine set to “This Time” by Son Lux. At the end, everyone watching, including his rival contestants, were on their feet. And then so were the judges, waving tickets to the dance academy without a word. Hugging the aspiring star, Lythgoe said, “Wow, young man. What you’ve been through.”

And when Hickman left the audition area, the head judge declared, “I’ll never complain again.” Lightening the mood, returning judge Mary Murphy asked, “Can we get that in writing?” Watch the videos below! NOTE: The video is no longer available.
