Dakota and Elle Fanning are not “at war,” despite a false report from an Australian tabloid. Gossip Cop can exclusively debunk the inaccurate article, which alleges their relationship is “strained.” We’re told there’s no truth to it.

According to NW, Dakota and “her little sister Elle are apparently locked in a bitter feud now that they’re competing against each other for the same Hollywood roles.” To back up its manufactured premise, the magazine cites an interview Dakota gave the UK edition of Marie Claire for its January 2018 issue. The tabloid writes, “Dakota admits [in the interview] that the pair had ‘nothing on common’ for years and ‘didn’t know what to do with each other.’”

The Australian outlet then maintains its so-called “insider” shares how the “relationship between the sisters has become even more strained in recent times, to the point they pretty much ‘hate’ each other.” The alleged “pal,” who furnished the tabloid with its information, goes on to assert, “They were very competitive [growing up], and they’re fighting over films now.” “They hardly ever speak,” concludes the possibly made-up source.

It appears the tabloid concocted its latest article, based on Dakota’s quotes in Marie Claire. But to say the magazine twisted her comments completely out of context is an understatement. That’s why Gossip Cop will give the actress’s full quotations. And far from the publication’s contentions that the sisters are “at war,” their relationship is “even more strained,” and they “hate” each other, if anything, they are closer now than they’ve ever been.

When the topic of Elle came up in Marie Claire, the magazine notes, “Despite being in the same competitive industry, Fanning and her famous sister have a great relationship, largely because of how organically both their careers developed.” Does that sound like it’s “strained” or that they “hate” one another and are “at war”?

As for the quotes NW used from the interview, it wholly misrepresented what Dakota had said. She basically explained that there were times when they had little in common simply because of their four-year age gap. Dakota told the women’s magazine, “There are a few years where you’re both experiencing such different things; age nine and 13 – nothing in common; 12 and 16 – we didn’t know what to do with each other.” But she stressed, and the tabloid purposely omitted, “Now as [Elle’s] getting older and I’m getting older we’re getting closer… and that’s really lovely.”

You know what’s not lovely? How the Aussie magazine published this entirely inaccurate story about the Fanning sisters’ relationship. The Daily Mail similarly parsed part of that Marie Claire interview to run an also misleading piece about how Dakota supposedly struggled to bond with Elle. Still, Gossip Cop fact-checks every claim, and a source close to both Elle and Dakota assures us, “There is absolutely no truth” to the tabloid’s “at war” article.
