Courteney Cox did not tell Matthew Perry she’ll date him if he gets sober, despite a ridiculous tabloid report. Gossip Cop can correct the phony story. It’s completely untrue.
“Courteney’s Last-Ditch Plan To Save Matthew!” reads a headline in the latest issue of the National Enquirer. The accompanying article says the actress has told her former Friends co-star that “the door is open for a romance, but he has to get his act together first.” An alleged insider is quoted as saying, “She’s told Matt that he’s a charming, wonderful guy with a lot to offer, but she’s not interested in dating someone with too much baggage.”
The questionable source continues, “If Matt can stay sober for a sustained period of time and keep his nose clean, the word is Courteney will give him a shot.” From there, the outlet drags the rest of the Friends cast into the bogus narrative, claiming Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer are all rooting for the romance/sobriety scenario to play out. The supposed source concludes that Perry has been in love with Cox ever since their Friends days, adding, “He always shows up looking sharp and clean when Courteney’s around. This might just work!”
Perry has been very open about his struggles with addiction over the years, and while Cox remains a supportive friend, nothing about the magazine’s article is true. For starters, the actress has been dating Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid for several years. Cox frequently shares messages about her boyfriend on Instagram, including a loving tribute on his birthday earlier this year and another one of her taking care of him following a spinal surgery.
Despite the fact that the actress is in a committed relationship, Gossip Cop still reached out to a source close to Cox, who confirms that the Enquirer‘s report is “totally fabricated.” This storyline seems to have been invented because Cox shared an Instagram photo of her and Perry revealing they met up for lunch earlier this month. The relationship between the former co-stars remains platonic.
It should also be noted, the Enquirer and its sister publications can’t seem to keep their stories straight. This week’s issue of OK!, which is owned by the same parent company, featured a three-page spread about a full-on romance between Cox and Perry. That article insisted the two stars have been secretly dating, but this latest piece says she’ll only date him if he gets sober. The reason these two articles don’t align is because neither one is true.
Meanwhile, Gossip Cop busted the Enquirer last year for falsely claiming Cox was getting married to McDaid in Ireland, but wasn’t inviting Aniston to the wedding. The actress never walked down the aisle with her boyfriend, while she and Aniston remain as close as ever.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
