Coleen Rooney, wife of famed soccer star Wayne Rooney, published a note on Twitter about her investigation into the amount of stories that were leaked about her family to the tabloids. Rooney’s conclusion was that the leaks were coming from the account of Rebekah Vardy, wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. The resulting drama has taken social media by storm, and that excitement has led to a slight degree of misinformation.
The issue arose when Rooney noticed that the London tabloid The Sun published information based on her posts on her private Instagram account, meaning someone she had allowed to follow her account was sharing the posts with the publication. “There has been so much information given to them about me, my friends and my family,” Rooney wrote, “all without my permission or knowledge.” As a result, Rooney launched her own investigation into the source of the leaks by hiding her Instagram story from everyone except one account and posting misleading stories to her account.
“It’s Rebekah Vardy’s account,” Rooney finished. The purposely false stories including posts about traveling to Mexico to look into a “gender selection” IVF treatment, her returning to television, and her new home’s basement flooding. The only account to view these stories, Rooney wrote, was Vardy’s.
Exactly 30 minutes later, Vardy responded with a note of her own on Twitter and a phone call to Rooney herself. “I never speak to anyone about you as various journalists who have asked me to over the years can vouch for,” Vardy wrote. “Over the years, various people have had access to my Insta,” she continued, “and just this week, I found I was following people I didn’t know and have never followed myself.”
Vardy argued that Rooney should have approached her privately about the matter since Vardy had nothing to gain by selling stories to the tabloid in the first place. “I liked you a lot Coleen, and I’m so upset that you have chosen to do this, especially when I’m heavily pregnant,” Vardy wrote. “I’m disgusted that I’m even having to deny this.”
The most important clarification to make in this issue is that Rooney never directly stated that Vardy had leaked the information herself. She only indicated that the leaks originated from Vardy’s account, although she does refer to “account/individual” before revealing the source in her note. There was no direct call out of Vardy however. Gossip Cop will continue to monitor the situation.
Gossip Cop cannot come to a verdict either way.
