Is Elsa Pataky going out without her wedding ring proof that she and Chris Hemsworth are having marriage problems? That's the premise of a new tabloid story. But Gossip Cop can point out far stronger evidence that the couple is doing just fine.
Using a photograph of Pataky in Byron Bay, Woman's Day Australia points out that she wasn't wearing her wedding ring, and claims that "sources fear it could be a sign that there's trouble in her marriage." A so-called "insider" is quoted as saying, "Elsa is normally never seen without her ring. It's not like her to take it off, and there's a worry it could be because there's real tension between her and Chris."
It's awfully curious that the magazine purports to have an "insider," yet this supposed source has no insight on whether not there is, in fact, "trouble in her marriage." After all, if this purported tipster is really a member of Pataky's world, couldn't he or she just ask her what's going on, instead of anonymously sharing "fears" and "worries" with a gossip outlet? Rather, the purported snitch merely offers, "They've had their ups and downs in the past, but they've always pulled through. No one wants to see Chris and Elsa break up."
It's actually quite apparent that they aren't. Earlier this month, Pataky posted an Instagram photo of herself and Hemsworth on a "weekend getaway," and called him a "handsome man" in the caption. And less than two weeks ago, Pataky and Hemsworth showed off a lot of PDA, kissing and wrapping their arms and legs around each other, as they dined with Matt Damon and his wife Luciana. There was certainly no "tension" between them then.
The outlet manufactured this story just because of a single paparazzi picture of Pataky sans her ring. She was also without makeup, which suggests this wasn't a full-fledged outing but just a quick jaunt somewhere. Not everyone wears their ring for every single errand. But this is actually a typical tabloid trope. In May, the National Enquirer claimed Ellen DeGeneres was in a "marriage crisis," because she, too, was photographed without her wedding ring.
But that wasn't legitimate proof of an imminent divorce from Portia de Rossi, just like Pataky going without her own ring is not proof of an impending divorce from Hemsworth. These are merely instances of tabloids concocting narratives based paparazzi photos. But if these publications are going to make judgements based on pictures, it's quite clear from the snapshots Gossip Cop highlighted, including one posted by Pataky herself, that she and Hemsworth are still going strong.
Gossip Cop believes there to be elements of truth, but the story is ultimately misleading.
