As Gossip Cop reported, Cornell was found dead in Detroit on Thursday. Police later said the 52-year-old rocker committed suicide just hours after performing a concert with Soundgarden. His passing stunned the music community and beyond, prompting a flood of tributes across social media.

And on Friday, Dick Clark Productions announced the late frontman would also be remembered at the Billboard Music Awards. Imagine Dragons was selected to lead the tribute, with Dan Reynolds and his rock band already slated to perform at the event. Now they planned to also give a speech about how Cornell and his groups, Soundgarden and Audioslave, influenced them. Indeed, Imagine Dragons tweeted on the day of the music icon’s death, “Rest In Peace Chris. you inspired us as well as millions of artists around the world.”

Now the BBMAs tribute came nearly 30 minutes before the end of the the star-studded ceremony. Reynolds took the stage solo, saying that while it was a night to celebrate, “It’s also a time to recall a member of our community we lost this past week.” He went on, “Chris Cornell was true innovator, a musical architect and a pioneer on the cutting edge of the Seattle grunge movement. He was a prolific songwriter, a legendary performer, a singer who had a voice for the ages, and a philanthropist whose Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation helped so many children around the world. Even though Chris is gone, his legacy endures.”

Reynolds sent “respects and love” to Cornell’s family, and asked the audience to join him in a moment of silence. Check out the video below.
