Chloe Grace Moretz insinuates in a new interview that she turned down an invitation to join Taylor Swift’s squad. The actress, who’s an outspoken feminist, expresses her belief that the singer’s group of gal pals, and others like it, are “cliques” that “appropriate exclusivity.”

Moretz, who graces the cover of Complex’s April/May issue, tells the magazine that the goal of feminism should be about standing up for universal equality, and “not just about women being powerful.” The actress adds, “It’s about races being powerful; genders being powerful.”

The young actress is friends with Selena Gomez, with whom she co-stars in the upcoming comedy Neighbors 2, and it’s through that mutual connection she met Swift. When asked if Swift tried to recruit her for her infamous squad, Moretz simply states, “Yes,” without further explanation. But when pressed to elaborate, the actress would only say, “She’s a very talented person.”

The opinionated actress says she brings her beliefs about equality to work as well. “If you hire me, you’re not going to get some little girl that’s just going to sit there and be this puppet for whatever you want to push on society and appropriate,” notes Moretz. “There have been moments where I’ve read scripts and said, ‘Look… As a young woman, this is what has to change.’”
