Chip and Joanna Gaines appeared live on Tuesday’s “Today” show to promote his new book, Capital Gaines. They also discussed deciding to end “Fixer Upper.” Watch the video below.

Savannah Guthrie began by joking about needing a “support group” as people are in “despair” over the couple’s decision to make the upcoming season of their hit HGTV show its last. Joanna said she understands fans not wanting to let go. “We’ve all grown together, with the audience. They’ve come alongside with us,” she said. “On the other side, there was also this encouragement. Even though it’s sad, they get it. We have this young, growing family and I just think that’s one of the biggest reasons we wanted this.”

Chip also showed signs of exhaustion, despite his zest for life. “Nobody knows when you get into something like this, from our perspective. Obviously somebody knows. When we got into this, ’cause I’m an idiot, I thought this was a get-rich-quick scheme. I was thinking we could work about eight hours a month and you end up with all these riches when all is said and done,” he admitted. “But unfortunately, it’s not quite that easy. And I mean the emotion, and the amount of energy it takes to kind of pour something like this together. Who knows? I can’t speak on anyone else’s behalf but I know for Jo and I, every day we showed up to work, we wanted it to be the real deal. We wanted it to be authentic, legit, sincere and I think that’s why people were drawn to it.”

As for rumors that the couple chose to end the show due to marriage problems, Chip confessed, “I’ll give them a little credence. There is always what’s next. And for us, the most important thing in the world is Jo and I’s relationship, followed by, very quickly, by these four kids and we didn’t want to push it, red-line it for so long that we woke up and realized we are at a point of no return. We wanted to take a step back and focus on the thing that absolutely was the most important thing in the world, which is Jo and I’s relationship.” He insisted, “We’re as healthy as we’ve ever been. I just didn’t want to continue pushing this envelope to the fullest extent. We’re really thankful we had the opportunity to sort of step back and take a break.”

As for the book, titled Capital Gaines: Smart Things I Learned Doing Stupid Stuff, Joanna said the message is, “Get past fear and failure and go for your dreams.” Added Chip, “Even the dumb risks end up paying off to some extent.” As Gossip Cop reported, Chip and Joanna were also on “Today” last month, during which they denied they’re divorcing.
