Last year, Gossip Cop busted a tabloid for claiming Cher and Meryl Streep were feuding on the set of the Mamma Mia! sequel. More than six months have gone by, and there is now additional evidence proving the rumor was wrong. The iconic stars are actually close friends.
On November 2, 2017, Gossip Cop examined a Star story that alleged Cher was "bringing all kinds of chaos" to the set of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. A so-called "tipster" was quoted as saying, "Cher seems to think everyone, including Meryl, should bow down to her. And Meryl Streep does not bow down to anyone." It was further alleged that the atmosphere between Cher and Streep during the production was "icy," to the point where everyone just wanted to get the shoot "over with."
Gossip Cop did some investigating, however, and found this tale to be meritless. First off, we pointed out that Streep and Cher had previously worked together without issue in 1983's Silkwood. In an interview Cher later did for Burlesque in 2010, she even said she wanted to work with Streep again and was disappointed scheduling didn't work out for her to appear in Mamma Mia!. And when the timing worked out for the sequel, Cher repeatedly posted on Twitter that she was having a "great" time with the "wonderful cast & crew."
On top of all that readily available proof, Cher's rep told Gossip Cop on the record that the feud narrative was "so silly," noting she and Streep "totally love one another" and had a "fabulous reunion." Now that they've reunited to promote the film, which hit theaters on Friday, there is even more evidence that they get along well. For example, in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" this past week, Streep said reuniting with Cher was "fantastic," and even said the singer "steals the movie."
Their mutual appreciation for one another was on full display at the London premiere a few days ago, where Cher and Streep kissed on the red carpet. That same night, Cher posted on Twitter, "I [love] everyone who worked on the film... especially Mary Louise Streep." It couldn't be more apparent that Star's Cher-Streep feud storyline was entirely bogus.
Unfortunately, the tabloids often pit women against each other. In our original debunking, we pointed out a similarly phony story about Cher feuding with Celine Dion. More recently, we've corrected a number of untrue articles about Streep and Nicole Kidman being at "war" on the set of "Big Little Lies." These are all legendary women, and they are able to coexist in the world of Hollywood without clashing, contrary to what the gossip media often wants readers to believe.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
