HollywoodLife is claiming to have "exclusively learned" why Chelsea Handler would "never date" Brad Pitt. Gossip Cop can explain how and why this fake news was manufactured.
As Gossip Cop reported, earlier this week Naughty Gossip and RadarOnline ran completely false stories about Handler and Pitt "cozying up." Claiming the comedienne was no longer friends with Jennifer Aniston, the sites alleged she was becoming pals with Aniston's ex-husband and possibly embarking on a project together. "Don't be surprised if we see Brad and Chelsea having lunch together soon," alleged a most assuredly fictional "source." Gossip Cop promptly investigated the claims and was exclusively told they weren't true.
HollywoodLies, on the other hand, picked up the allegations, wondering in a headline, "Is Angelina Jolie Nemesis Chelsea Handler Getting Close To Brad Pitt After Heartbreaking Split?" The webloid regurgitated the untrue contentions without bothering to fact-check them, and asked readers, "Do you think Chelsea and Brad would ever seriously date?" One day later, after Gossip Cop had already debunked the made-up assertions, the site ran its follow-up "exclusive" to answer that question.
"Are Chelsea Handler & Brad Pitt Getting Close?: Why She'd Never Date Jennifer Aniston's Ex," reads the headline of the second article. Here the outlet writes, "For those of you who may be worrying after hearing the Chelsea Handler and Brad Pitt dating rumors, don't fret!... She'd never hook up with him." Naturally, the outlet has a supposed "source," whom it quotes as saying, "[Chelsea Handler] finds the rumors both funny and a little hurtful. She is not looking to get with Brad and there is nothing to the rumors that a romance is brewing. Chelsea would be really damaging girl code and she would rather remain friends with Jen then ruffle feathers [sic] and try to start something with Brad. It is not happening."
But if HollywoodLies really had a "source," why didn't it know there's "nothing to the rumors" before copying and pasting them as if they might be true? Shouldn't the site have been able to speak to its "source" to begin with and confirm right off the bat that they were false? The answers to these questions should be obvious at this point to anyone who has closely followed Gossip Cop's examinations of the online publication's fake news stories. HollywoodLies didn't actually know there was "nothing to the rumors," which is why it had no problem spreading the misinformation. And it doesn't actually have a "source," which is why it didn't bother to investigate before running its initial story.
Rather, after Gossip Cop busted the claims and not a single reputable outlet corroborated them, the webloid decided to extend the life of the topic and capture any continued interest by pretending it "exclusively learned" the assertions were untrue. In other words, HollywoodLies did what it always does: It took an existing subject and manufactured fake news around it to capitalize on potential traffic. It's pretty much true that Handler would never date Pitt. But no one actually told the site that. If this article was any more transparent, it would be made of glass.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
