Is Charlize Theron turning her back on South Africa and refusing to return to her home country due to the violent crimes taking place there? That's the rude and bogus claim in one tabloid this week. Gossip Cop found it false.

The Globe claims Theron has effectively disowned her native country with a photo of the actress that's captioned, "I ain't coming back!" The outlet says Theron is "horrified" by the violent crimes occurring in the country and "just doesn't feel safe there." According to an unnamed insider, "The bottom line is South Africa is not a safe place right now. She has no plans to go back, at least not when there's so much crime infesting the neighborhoods."

Gossip Cop reached out to one of our sources close to Theron, who tells us the claims simply aren't true. While the country is indeed struggling with violent crime, Theron's love and efforts to aid her home country show no signs of stopping. Just last month, during a fundraising event for the Nigerian charity GEANCO, Theron explained some of her personal experiences working to improve her home country.

"A lot of the places where we support grassroots organizations, who are the highest affected when it comes to AIDS and HIV in South Africa, are, I think it's a no-brainer, very rural communities," Theron said. "A lot of those kids do not know who I am. Strangely, they always know that I am South African. And that's heaven. It's amazing to be around your sisters and to have that be the thing they know about you. It's always moved me so much when they run up to me and say, 'Hey, sissy!'"

The actress started her own charity, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, to give back to the continent. Regardless of what problems trouble her home, she's obviously not willing to stand idly by or give up on the country. She's even spoken up about her personal struggles reconciling her Hollywood image with her South African roots.

"I love my country," Theron told GQ in 2016. "And it's very hard for South Africans to believe that, because I left and speak in an American accent. I have a very, very strong connection to my country and to its people. It's the mother that might have abandoned me, in a weird way, but not all the way. I'm not having a pity party, but I'm constantly trying to win its love back."

Gossip Cop has called out the Globe several times for other made-up stories about Theron. This past February, it incorrectly reported that Theron was pregnant with Brad Pitt's child — a claim that looks even sillier nine months later. The outlet was also responsible for a similar piece about Theron taking revenge on Angelina Jolie by dating Pitt. The tabloid can't even get the actress's romantic feelings right, let alone her feelings for her homeland.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
